You know the Spice Girls song “When Two Become One”? If this broccoli cheddar soup mac and cheese had a theme song, that would be it. A mash-up of two comfort food classics, this recipe proves you really can have it all.

If you’re craving broccoli-cheddar soup and mac and cheese, this ingenious recipe lets you have both. That’s right — you never have to choose between the two again.

You’ll need two large pots for this meal. In one pot you’ll boil your pasta (the author used cavatappi, but traditional elbows or shells would be great here too). Before you’re ready to drain, you also drop in some broccoli florets to cook alongside the pasta. So smart! In the other pot you’ll make your sauce, with butter, onion, carrot, flour, chicken broth, heavy cream, milk, nutmeg, and sharp cheddar.

Combine the pasta and broccoli with the cheese sauce until it’s completely coated. If you want to double down on the carbs and really treat this like a bowl of broccoli-cheddar soup, you can serve with some crusty bread on the side. Otherwise, dig in!
