The Top 10 Food Trends of 2014
In 2014 we saw the rise and fall of many a food trend. This year, cauliflower rose out of the dust to become a coveted vegetable; Surge came back from its 90s grave; and everyone seemed to be eating extra-fancy toast. Here's a look back at the top 10 food trends and stories of 2014.
The rising star this year was definitely cauliflower. Before, it was a little misunderstood. It's kinda squeaky, a little boring raw, and intimidating to prep. Well, no more! Cauliflower can be turned into anything your heart desires, including pizza crust, couscous, and steaks.
Expensive toast, avocado toast, toast shaped like a panda — however you slice it, toast was totally cool this year.
3. The Negroni Cocktail
Easy, classic, and totally great, the Negroni dominated the cocktail scene in 2014.
The much-loved soda of the 90s came back to life in September this year. People did some weird stuff with it.
Fermented foods, especially pickles, were big in 2014. Expect to see more of this kind of thing in 2015.
6. Ice Cream Sandwiches
Artisanal ice cream has been on the rise, and crazy ice cream sandwiches were definitely a thing this year.
The Cronut of 2013 led the charge for more crazy frankendesserts, including a dessert lasagna.
Ramen continued to dominate in 2014, and found itself as the base for new, exciting things, like sandwiches and tacos.
This year, the super trendy kale and Brussels sprouts gave birth to a shiny new vegetable: BrusselKale! (Also called Kalettes.)
10. Vegetable Fries, Rice, and Pasta
This year, vegetables were turned into all kinds of crazy things, like fries, rice, and pasta (thanks to the spiralizer trend).
