Science Says: Skim Milk Might Not Be the Best Choice
Thanks to America's fear of fat, most of us opt for low- and no- fat options when we hit the dairy section in our local grocery stores. But why? Is skim milk really better for you? Maybe not. In fact, according to a study published in the journal Circulation, it might be time to put down the skim and reach, instead, for whole milk. Rejoice!
The 15-year study revealed that participants who drank whole milk had a 46 percent lower risk of developing diabetes than their reduced-fat-dairy-drinking peers. Further, an unrelated but complementary 2016 study found that consuming full-fat diary products could reduce a woman's risk of obesity by 8 percent.
Mozaffarian, who authored the 15-year study, isn't saying that we should start guzzling full-fat milk by the gallon, but he's hopeful that consumers will begin to consider it in a different light. He said, “in the absence of any evidence for the superior effects of low-fat dairy, and some evidence that there may be better benefits of whole-fat dairy products for diabetes, why are we recommending only low-fat dairy? We should be telling people to eat a variety of dairy and remove the recommendation about fat content.”
This is all good news for me, considering my thoughts about skim milk are about as flowery as Ron Swanson's in the clip below.
