Linen spray may sound like another froufrou extravagance that moms don’t need, but that couldn’t be more wrong. Because moms are tired — like, always. And when our heads finally hit the pillow, we want sleep to come easy and fast. The little luxury of scented linens is one of the best ways to turn off thoughts about the school project that’s due or what’s for dinner tomorrow.

The icing on the cake is that linen spray is so simple to make. You’ve already got water — and vodka, right? And chances are you have lavender essential oil. Find a tiny mister bottle and you have everything you need to make your own fancy-pants linen spray.

Why Vodka in Linen Spray?

Since oil and water don’t mix, vodka is there to help disperse the oil. It also helps the scent last longer in the air. If you don’t want to include vodka, you can substitute it for more distilled water or a hydrosol like rosewater. I don’t recommend using rubbing alcohol.

How To Make Homemade Linen Spray

The easiest linen spray, made with water, vodka, and essential oils. A lovely little gift for a friend or new mama.

Nutritional Info

Ingredients

Supplies

  • 1 1/2 ounces water, preferably distilled
  • 1 1/2 ounces vodka
  • 30 drops of essential oil, such as lavender

Equipment

  • Small, dark glass spray bottle
  • Measuring cup
  • Funnel (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine water and vodka: Measure out the water and vodka and pour both into a small spray bottle. Quick tip: A funnel will make your life so much easier here. Use a dark glass bottle if possible to preserve the essential oils.

  2. Add essential oil: Add 30 or so drops of your favorite essential oils to the spray bottle. Lavender is commonly used on linens because its soothing and relaxing scent is said to help bring on sleep.

  3. Shake the bottle: Replace the cap and give the bottle a good shake to disperse the essential oils. Shake the bottle again before each use and then lightly mist sheets or spray into the air.

Recipe Notes

More calming blends: Here are a few more blends that not only smell great, but will also help bring on the calm: 30 drops of Roman chamomile; 15 drops of lavender and 15 drops of bergamot; 18 drops of grapefruit, 6 drops of jasmine, and 6 drops of ylang ylang.

Beware staining: Be careful to only use lightly colored oils. For example, rose absolute essential oil smells lovely, but has an amber color that can stain.
