New legislation in France is cracking down on food waste in a big way. The recently passed law will ban big supermarkets from throwing away or purposefully spoiling unsold food so it can't be eaten.

Instead, they will be required to donate it to charity or for it to be used as animal feed.

Grocery stores must sign formal contracts by next July. Those that don't comply can face hefty fines, and possibly even jail time.
