Chrissy Teigen Has a Controversial Opinion on Ice Cream Sandwiches
Ice cream sandwiches seem like one of the most innocuous things a person could have a controversial opinion about. Ice cream is good. Cookies are good. Sandwiches are good. If you make a sandwich out of cookies and ice cream, what's not to like?
But now multiple celebrities are engaged in an ice cream sandwich debate on Twitter, and Chrissy Teigen revealed a pretty controversial take, saying that ice cream sandwiches made with real cookies are "garbage," and the only good ice cream sandwiches are the rectangular chocolate ones.
It all started when Silicon Valley star Kumail Nanjiani started talking about ice cream cakes on Twitter, where he took the controversial stance that ice cream cakes are failures and nobody likes them.
He does have a point. I was getting ready to roll up my sleeves and fight for the honor of ice cream cakes, but he's right. I haven't actually had an ice cream cake since I was 12 or so. I remember ice cream cakes as being the ne plus ultra of birthday desserts. But do I actually love ice cream cakes? Or has my brain replaced all my memories of actual ice cream cake with a memory of cake served with ice cream? Clearly, the only way to know for sure is to go buy an ice cream cake immediately.
But in the course of his tirade against ice cream cakes, Nanjiani made a bold, controversial statement: Ice cream sandwiches are better than ice cream cake.
But then Chrissy Teigen weighed in on ice cream sandwiches and surprised me immensely by saying that "ice cream sandwiches made with cookies are garbage."
I was surprised, because I would have thought Chrissy Teigen would be a fan of handmade ice cream sandwiches, probably with some kind of interesting flavors like lemon and blueberry, or peanut butter pudding. But the rectangular chocolate ice cream sandwiches certainly have the nostalgia factor going for them. (I like to lick the ice cream out of the sides and seal the chocolate cookie together like a giant ice cream raviolo, originally on the grounds that the ice cream wouldn't drip out as much if it melts, but now just for fun.)
But Nanjiani defended the cookie ice cream sandwich, saying he'd been to a wedding where they were made in front of guests, and they were so good he ate two of them.
Then Teigen's husband, John Legend, joined the debate, and he was on Nanjiani's side.
"Coolhaus cookie ice cream sandwiches are perfection," he wrote. "Don't @ me unless you know I'm right."
And it turns out the Coolhaus cookie ice cream sandwiches were exactly the ones Nanjiani had at the wedding.
Teigen's rectangular ice cream sandwiches are a classic, but Coolhaus' "ice cream sammies" are next-level. They're made with snickerdoodles, chocolate chip cookies, or chocolate fudge cookies and filled with ice cream in flavors like s'mores, birthday cake, mint, strawberry, peanut butter, brown butter and bacon, and even cookie dough.
The debate ended in a stalemate, but the real winner was the Twitter user in the comments who declared the ultimate ice cream sandwich to be made of vanilla ice cream between two toasted Eggo waffles.
She says the toasted waffles are crisp and buttery and warm, and you have to eat them quickly before the ice cream melts. I know what I'm doing this weekend.
What do you think of ice cream sandwiches made with cookies?
