10 Snacks I'd Rather Eat than Doritos' "Lady-Friendly" Chips

Maybe you've heard about PepsiCo's plans to launch a new "lady-friendly" chip? One that isn't as crunchy (to reduce noise) or messy? And maybe, upon hearing this news, you were left dumbfounded and angry?

You're not alone. Most of the women I've talked to about this new product all have the same response: Why? According to PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, "Although women would love to crunch crisps loudly, lick their fingers and pour crumbs from the bag into their mouth afterwards, they prefer not to do this in public."

We don't want lifeless, limp chips — we want that satisfying crunch that accompanies food that's been fried. We want to enjoy our crispy, messy foods with abandon. (Yes, in public.) In that spirit, here are 10 foods I'd rather eat than Doritos' sad new chips.

1. Honey-Mustard Snack Mix

This snack mix is the love child of Chex mix and those honey-mustard pretzels. With Chex cereal, mini pretzels, peanuts, and bagel chips, the crunch factor is high here. Also, plenty of butter, honey, mustard powder, and onion powder ensure this mix is finger-licking good.

2. How To Make Homemade Pita Chips

Hummus is nothing without some pita chips to dunk in it. This super-simple recipe for homemade pita chips only calls for four ingredients: olive oil, pita bread, salt, and pepper. Cut the pitas into wedges, brush them with oil, season them, and bake to golden, crispy pita chip perfection.

3. How To Make Crispy Roasted Chickpeas in the Oven

When you toss drained chickpeas in olive oil and salt and roast them at high heat, you're left with a crispy, salty snack. For up the crunch factor, these irresistible bites are great on top of a romaine salad, carrot, and radish salad.

4. Brown Butter and Tahini Dipped Radishes

Is there any sound more satisfying than the one you get from biting into a crisp, cold radish? This isn't just any radish, however — this one is dipped in a mixture of tahini and brown butter and rolled in sesame seeds for a little extra crunch.

5. Chocolate-Almond Toffee

Toffee is hated by dentists for a reason — it's super crunchy! Between all that caramel brittle and those crunchy nuts on top, toffee will deliver the crunch moment you're after. You'll probably get melted chocolate on your hands and around your mouth while eating this, too — embrace it.

6. How To Make Cheddar Cheese Crackers

Skip the box of Cheez-Its at the store and make your own at home! This is a great project to tackle on the weekend. There's nothing like the feeling of accomplishing a DIY version of your favorite childhood snack food — except maybe crunching into that snack food and getting the orange crumbs everywhere.

7. How To Make Homemade Copycat KIND Bars

Speaking of recreating snack favorites, this recipe for homemade copycat KIND bars is one to keep in your back pocket. With almonds, walnuts, puffed rice, and sesame seeds, you'll be crunching your way through snack time at the office. Sorry, cubicle mates! (Not sorry.)

8. Loaded Black Bean Nachos

Just because this recipe title has the word "loaded" in it doesn't mean you have to fall victim to sad, soggy nachos. You can top your nachos with all sorts of delicious, messy stuff — black beans, red onion, pico de gallo, pickled jalapeños, and, of course, cheese — and still have that classic crunch you crave.

9. Kohlrabi and Slaw

A hallmark of a good slaw — one that's bright and refreshing — is that it maintains a good crunch. This recipe, with kohlrabi, cabbage, carrots, and red onion, is most definitely deserving of the "good slaw" designation.

10. Smoked Salmon and Crème Fraîche Kettle Chips

This super-easy appetizer is party food, elevated. The unassuming kettle chip gets topped with a little smoked salmon, a dollop of crème fraîche, and a shower of snipped chives. It's crunchy, messy, and, gasp, it's made to be enjoyed in the company of friends.
