Hopefully you've never had to (and never will) use their services, but you should still consider spreading some love to your local fire department with an extra-thoughtful gift basket. After all, whether they're volunteers or paid employees, these men and women often risk their lives to save other lives in your community. That's pretty darn special and deserving of a good, home-cooked meal — at the very least.

Firefighter's Gift Box: Good Things to Include

  • A few jars of homemade chili
  • Cornbread
  • Toppings (think: scallions or chives, sour cream or crème fraîche, cheddar cheese, hot sauce, etc.)
  • Packages of beef jerky
  • Nuts
  • Homemade cookies

Fill up a rustic box (we thought this wooden option looked like something that might find a home in a firehouse once it's emptied) and drop it off just before lunch or dinner.

Some Pointers

  1. If you have no idea how many firefighters might be at the firehouse at any given time, you can give them a call ahead of time to find out. Tell them you're hoping to drop off some food and ask how many people you should cook for. They also might have a preferred time, which can help you plan.
  2. Chances are, you're not going to get your containers back. In fact, you should just plan on not getting them back (you don't want to give a gift that then requires people to track you down to return part of it!). So while you might not miss a few Mason jars, you might want to slice up and package the cornbread if you don't want to give your cast iron skillet away for good!
